What is a GEDCOM file?
GEDCOM is the standard file format for family trees. Almost every family history website and program can export one. It's a plain text file ending in .ged that lists people and how they're related. It doesn't include your photos.
Where do I get my GEDCOM file?
From wherever your tree lives now — Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast, RootsMagic, Family Tree Maker, Gramps and others all have an export option. Our step-by-step guide shows you where to find it.
Is it really free?
Yes. Creating an account, uploading your tree and using all four views is free. A paid plan for photos is coming later, and it will be optional.
Who can see my family tree?
Only you, when you're signed in. Your tree isn't public, isn't searchable, and isn't shared with other users or with genealogy companies. We don't sell or rent your data.
Can I change my tree here?
No — Family Galaxy is for viewing. Keep making changes in your usual family tree software or website, then use Refresh from Ancestry or another site on your dashboard to update your tree. We show you what changed before anything is saved.
Can Family Galaxy sync with Ancestry automatically?
No. Ancestry doesn't allow outside apps to connect to its trees, and we'll never ask for your Ancestry password. Instead, when your tree changes, export a fresh GEDCOM and use Refresh from Ancestry or another site on your dashboard. It takes about two minutes, shows you exactly who was added, updated or removed before saving, and keeps your previous versions so you can undo it. It works the same way for MyHeritage, Findmypast and family tree software.
How big a tree can I upload?
Files up to 20 MB, which is usually tens of thousands of people. If your file is bigger, export it without notes or sources.
Does it work on an iPad or phone?
Yes. All four views work in a modern browser on a computer, tablet or phone. The Galaxy view needs 3D graphics, which nearly every device from the last few years supports.
Who is the person in the middle?
We pick the person your file marks as the home person, or the person with the most recorded ancestors. You can make anyone the home person with one click, and every view re-centres on them.
Why is a place missing from the map?
We look up each place name to find it on the map. Very small hamlets, misspelt places or historic names that no longer exist sometimes can't be found. Writing places as Town, County, Country in your tree gives the best results.
How do I delete my account?
Go to your dashboard and choose Delete account. Your tree file and account details are removed straight away.
